Transfer Students

Transfering to a new institution may change your acdemic timeline, which means a few extra details to consider. However, education abroad is still a possibility for many transfer students.  With a little planning, you may be able to find a program that works for you.

Important Considerations

Transfer students must spend their first semester on campus, but may consider study abroad in the following terms.

New transfer students interested in study abroad should begin planning as early as possible.  Be aware of the important application deadlines, and make an appointment with an OEAA advisor sooner rather than later.

Academic Planning

It is especially important to confirm how study abroad can fit into your academic plans.  Talk to your academic advisors and the Registrar's Office to confirm what requirements you need to earn towards your degree and whether you have any prerequisites or major requirements to consider.

GPA Requirements & Approval

One of the most important considerations for transfer students is that they do not yet have an established GPA.  Davidson College requires a minimum 2.5 GPA for students to study abroad, and the vast majority of study abroad programs have their own requirements for applicants.

Conditional Approval

Transfer students who are in good standing and who meet all other eligibility requirements except the GPA requirement may be considered for a conditional approval.  This will allow you to move forward with the application process, until your GPA can be confirmed at the end of your first semester at Davidson.

In order to receive final approval to go abroad, you must successfully complete your courses by the end of your first semester and earn at least the Davidson College minimum GPA of 2.5.

 Important Reminder

Davidson approval, conditional or otherwise, does not guarantee that you will be accepted to a study abroad program.  All programs have their own policies about eligibility for study abroad.

Things to Consider

Review these tips and questions as you plan your experience.

  • How will courses abroad apply to my Davidson degree requirements?

  • What are the timelines for my major requirements?  Are there certain classes which I need to take on campus?

  • How many course credits have I transferred to Davidson?

  • Am I ready for this experience?  Do I have enough structure and support in my environment to stay on track abroad?

  • How am I adapting to Davidson?  How will studying abroad affect my transition to campus life?
